Backflushing Your Espresso Machine

HOW TO BACKFLUSH YOUR ESPRESSO MACHINE

1. Remove portafilter basket and insert blind filter in portafilter (a stubby screwdriver can help!) Add up to 1/2 teaspoon (3 g) of Espresso Parts Cleaning Powder. The scoop on the back of your Pallo Coffee Tool is the right size for one dose of cleaner. Insert portafilter into group head.

2. Activate brew cycle for 10 seconds. Stop 10 seconds. Repeat 5 times

3. Remove portafilter. Activate brew cycle and rinse portafilter in stream of water from group head. Stop cycle.

4. Insert portafilter into group head. Repeat step (2) without detergent.

5. Remove portafilter and switch out the blind basket with the basket used to brew.

6. Once more flush the group head to ensure no soap residue is left.

HOW TO USE A RUBBER BACKFLUSH DISC

1. Place backflush disc into clean portafilter basket.  Ensure the small protrusion is facing up so the flat face of the disc is fully covering the expulsion holes of the basket.

2. Add your backflush detergent (Purro Caff / Cafiza etc) directly into the basket with the blind disc in place.  You'll want to use around 0.5Tsp.

3. Dispense a small amount of water from the grouphead into the basket and allow the detergent to begin dissolving.

4. Insert portafilter into grouphead and perform back flush procedures, making sure to follow the manufacturer guidelines for your brand of espresso machine.

5. Viola, you now have a clean group!  Be sure to use a stiff bristle Pallo brush in the grouphead bayonet ring and gently scrub out any residual coffee oil or particulate build-up before you're finished backflushing.

**Be sure to refer to you user manual because things can vary according to the model you have.

COMMON FAQS ABOUT BACKFLUSHING

How often should you backflush an espresso machine?

For a very busy cafe, we recommend backflushing with detergent daily as well as backflushing with water every day or two.

What happens if you don't backflush an espresso machine?

If an espresso machine is not backflushed, the passageway will slowly fill with solidified oils and other residues until the flow is completely stopped. If your espresso machine reaches this point, it can become an expensive and time intensive fix.
